Who can read this book?

young adult fiction magic

A question I get frequently is “who can read this book?” when I tell them I’ve published a novel.

The answer is: anyone who can read!

But that’s not what they’re looking for. Is it suitable for my kid? they ask. Is it for kids or for adults?

Yes, I say. It’s perfect for any lover of a good adventure story who wants fantasy, magic, wicked sorcerers and a fight between good and evil. It’s suitable for ages 12 – 13 and above, has the barest mention of sex, and the relationship between the two main characters is platonic friendship – and how often do you read that in books these days? You don’t have to be a teenager to read it. You can be an adult who loves these things too.

I didn’t have an age group in mind when I wrote it. I wrote it for teenage me: the one who read every book in the library she could get her hands on, searching for an adventure fantasy where the main character wasn’t a boy, or a princess in disguise, or an orphan assassin who turns out to be a secret princess. I wanted a book where the main character had a nice family (not a broken one, or a dead mother). I wanted a book where the girl was special, sure, but it was her decision to go on the adventure, not be called upon by some old guy or answer the prophecy. Well, ok, so Erin does get called upon by an old guy and does answer the prophecy, but the old guy thinks she isn’t serious and the prophecy is pretty ambiguous anyway.

If you like boxes, pop it into the young adult fantasy fiction section in your local library/bookstore.
